Something You Can Read Now
The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, Fred Bernard, and Benjamin Flao
This book is a beautiful love letter to trees. It’s a graphic novel adaptation of the nonfiction book by Peter Wohlleben. The original format did quite well and someone had the foresight to turn it into a graphic novel. I have not read the original but the adaptation is truly wonderful.
It, as the title suggests, is all about trees and the details you likely don’t know about them. It is fascinating. The story is told through the narrative of the author’s life, from outdoor kid, to professional forrester, to advocate.
While probably not targeted specifically to teens, if yours like the outdoors or learning interesting things, this book would be perfect for them.
Industry Insights: Manga for Kids
My buddy Josh Sippie is an editor at Harper Alley. He is also a manga enthusiast who writes a weekly newsletter about whatever current Manga story or creator he is enamored with.
If you don’t know, Manga is broadly defined as Japanese comics and though diverse, has an immediately recognizable aesthetic. It’s popularity has skyrocketed outside of Japan over the last couple decades. So it’s unsurprising that creators outside of Japan want to create their own version of that.
In the article I’ve linked below, Josh talks about how Western publishers are helping to bring existing Japanese titles to the children’s audience in the U.S. along with new original English language manga by creators outside of Japan. Scholastic’s Graphix is launching a brand new Manga version of Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants.

New York Public Library Writing Contest for Kids & Ice Cream Party
Okay, this is New York City specific but it’s too cool not to mention. I have no clue if any of my readers even live in NYC but if you do or know someone with a kid that does, definitely share this with them.
NYPL’s annual writing contest for kids is going on now. All the entrants and their families will be invited to an exclusive ice cream party at the end of summer which will include all sorts of guests, prizes, and free swag including some things from Bangagrang.
