    Something you can read soon

Super, mega awesome major news… Bangarang is coming out next month! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, either welcome to the newsletter or thanks for reading again.

  • Bangarang is the comic magazine for kids that we have been working on for ages. And after a crazy rollercoaster ride, it’s coming to mailboxes. If you’re thinking “wasn’t it called Hullabaloo?” yes it was, but we had trademark issues which necessitated a name change. But we think Bangarang is pretty cool. Regardless, it’s got all the same ridiculous-comic-nougat goodness inside.

If you backed us on Kickstarter, look for Bangarang in you mailbox or inbox around the middle of June.

If you didn’t get in on the Kickstarter, there’s still time! We don’t have the option to get a subscription on the website yet, but if you’re interested, just reply to me here, and we’ll get you set up!

Bangarang is comic reading just for the fun of it. No lessons, no agenda, just ridiculous comics. Perfect for kids 8-13 (and adults who refuse to grow up).

  • Something you can read now

    Outlaw’s Apprentice by Chris Schweizer.

I’ve been a fan of Chris’s work ever since I saw some upcoming pages of a book that turned out to be the first book in his middle grade Crogan’s Adventures series. Chris is a fount of comic knowledge and enthusiasm.

I’ve been a longtime subscriber to his Patreon as well. His papercraft figure series are always a delight. He’s currently working through the characters of Lord of the Rings.

  • His latest comic is Outlaw’s Apprentice and he’s serializing it for free. You can read it on Webtoon. But I’d encourage you to sign up for his Patreon. Like I said, it’s filled with great stuff and you can subscribe for as little as $1 a month! Comics can be a difficult career to make a living at, so even minor support in aggregate can make a meaningful difference in a creator’s life.

Anyway the Outlaw’s Apprentice first two installments just dropped and it looks like it’s going to be a thoroughly entertaining romp. A swashbuckling fantasy set in the southeastern U.S. What a fun concept. Check it out!

    • Not comics but something worth reading

Author Ryan Holiday shares his thoughts about running a bookstore for 5 years. Definitely some great ways to approach things in your own life. No bookstore required.

Here’s one: Think of it as an experiment. When I was kicking around the idea, Tim Ferriss told me to think of it as an experiment. Try it for two years, he said, and if you hate it at the end or it’s failing, then walk away. This piece of advice was so freeing. It gave me an out—which allowed me to bravely dive in. Because I wasn’t betting my whole life on something, just a contained time commitment. Thinking of every venture, every project as an experiment is a great way to go through life. It lowers the stakes. It minimizes the downside. It lets you take a shot on something that otherwise might be way too intimidating.

Lee Gatlin. I love this guy’s art. He makes it look effortless. I can assure you, it is not.
