1. Something Christmasy you can read now
The 13th Day of Christmas by Adam Rex
Check out this delightful book trailer Adam made for his new book. It’s out now, just in time to add to your holiday reading. Adam’s work is truly impressive. He would have been right at home in the golden age of illustration.
2. Something else Christmasy you can read now
Knight Owl’s Little Christmas
We’re big fans of Christopher Denise’s Knight Owl picture books at our house. So it was a delight when we stumbled on this new Christmas edition to the series.
3. Something not remotely Christmasy for your teen
If your teen likes horror, check out Thane Benson’s Kickstarter for Hellhole Quarterly, a crime mystery set in the fires of hell. This is for the latest installment, but you can catch up on past issues with pay-what-you-want. But there’s only one week left to get it!
It doesn’t look like this is part of the current Kickstarter but check out these pics from Thane’s last project, Halloween House. A mini-comic that you unfold as you go along. So awesome! I’d like to do a comic in this format at some point.
4. Comedy silliness
Check out these short gags that turn Dungeon and Dragons on its head with a group of dragon friends playing Household and Humans.
5. Instagram Art Crush
Finnish illustrator Teemu Juhani, strikes the perfect balance of cartoony and detailed that I love. Think Sergio Aragones, Where’s Waldo, and a pinch of Edward Gorey.
6. For the artist – Pencils and sketchbook
These Paper Mate mechanical pencils for kids and this cheap UCreate sketchbook are my favorite things to doodle with.
I picked up one of these UCreate sketchbooks at Target years ago and fell in love with it. They’re spiral bound and layflat, so very convenient for drawing. And the paper texture is the ideal weight and smoothness for my preference. And for less than 10 bucks, I don’t feel precious about filling them up with inconsequential nonsense like I might with something like a moleskin.
These pencils are awesome. Made for kids, they are chunky and comfortable to hold. Super cheap too, so you can have a bunch around for easy access. I actually leave one in my jeans pocket so I always have one with me.
7.Favorite thing I drew this month
I took a brief respite from Hullabaloo to work on Woodland Hills. I liked how these turned out. I’ve got a timelapse drawing on my Instagram of the first panel.
