6 Great Finds for Comic-Loving Kids
I’m so glad you’re reading this! While this newsletter is written for adults like you, it’s really for kids—your readers, your students, your own kids.
Each month, I share the best kid-comic (and adjacent) things I come across: great books, fun creators, cool news. You might enjoy a lot of it yourself (I do!), but the real magic happens when you pass it on to the young people in your life.
So read, enjoy, and share the good stuff!
1. Calvin & Hobbes… Animated?!
The artist Elebant took a classic Calvin and Hobbes comic and turned it into a fantastic 14-second animation—and it works. It’s magical to see these characters in motion (unofficially, of course).
2. Read It. Play It. Greta Whiteshark on Roblox
Creators Patrick Bagatta and Emily Mullock released a Greta Whiteshark Meets the Mermaids graphic novel and a Roblox game to go with it.
Honestly, the only thing I know about Roblox is that kids love it. So what a smart move by Patrick and Emily—meeting kids where they already are.
If your kids try it, I’d love to hear what they think!
3. Steampunk Mickey in a Parallel Ocean
Even if you’re ambivalent about Mickey Mouse (same), this book looks stunning:
Mickey Mouse and the Lost Ocean, just released in the U.S., is a dystopian steampunk adventure set in a parallel world.
“Scavengers like Mickey and Goofy hunt rare fuel from the seafloor. Rogues like Peg-Leg Pete want it too. Then a strange stone cube appears—one with powers that could send the entire ocean flying into the sky.”
This book was originally published in Europe and only now translated. I haven’t read it yet, but the art is gorgeous.
4. Free Drawing Mag from the Etherington Brothers
If your kid (or you!) loves to draw, this is a treat:
The Etherington Brothers, creators of the beloved How to Think When You Draw series, just launched a FREE monthly digital magazine.
Each issue includes:
-
Brand-new tutorials (a year before they appear online!)
-
Drawing tips, creativity boosts, and more

5. “Stop Aspiring.” – Robert Rodriguez on Labels
This 5-minute clip from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids) is worth your time:
“Stop aspiring. You have to change your identity.”
He’s talking to Tim Ferriss about how the labels we give ourselves shape what we actually do.

Bonus: If you’re a parent, listen to his takes on journaling and collaborating with your kids (timestamps included).
6. Aardman + Star Wars = Pure Delight
I Am Your Mother is a short Star Wars story by the folks behind Wallace & Gromit. It’s part of the Star Wars Visions series on Disney+ and is an absolute delight. Funny, heartfelt, and packed with quirky stop-motion charm.
🛸 Runtime: ~10 minutes

7. Bonus – Favorite Thing I Drew This Month
I liked this quiet little scene with Niles and his mom. Page 166. 37 more to go.
We made our annual pilgrimage to the L.A. Festival of Books. It rained in the morning, fairly hard actually for L.A. It was lovely once it cleared up.
I picked up some books that I’m looking forward to reading. I had to work and wasn’t able to stay very long. So I was not able to visit as much as I would have liked. Sorry if I missed you and your awesome books! Next time.
