6 Awesome Kid Comic Things

1. Something You Can Read Now

I came across The Kong Crew at WonderCon. What if Kong won the battle? That’s an intriguing concept. But really it was Eric Herenguel’s art that drew me in. It’s reminiscent of the timeless art of The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens and Xenozoic Tales by Mark Schultz. (Both of which I’m a huge fan of.)

Here’s the description: It is 1947, 14 years after the victory of Kong over the US military. Manhattan Island has been evacuated and is now a no-go zone. These are the adventures of the pilots of the elite squadron tasked with watching over Kong’s new domain, where, rumor has it, strange things have started happening…

This would be a more teen appropriate title. The collected hardcover is currently only available in French but there is an English translation available in single comics that you can order from the website.

3. Art Crush

Lorena Alvarez Gómez is this month’s Instagram art crush. Her work perfectly encapsulates what I find appealing in kid comics art. Speaking of, she does indeed make comics which include Nightlights and Hicotea

    4. Sketchnoters Tutorial

Zsofi Lang shares her approach for combining typography and illustration. If you’ve ever had an interest in sketchbook journaling or meeting notes, check it out. Her tutorial is insightful and does a great job of explaining and sharing in a way that instills the reader with a sense that they can do this themself. Great stuff!

      5. Not Explaining Everything

I love this explanation Quentin Tarantino gives when asked by a journalist “What does the title of Reservoir Dogs mean?”

Quentin does not make stories for kids but I think he has a wonderful point of view on why he doesn’t explain everything to the audience. Which leads to a good question to ask your kid when they ask about the meaning of something ambiguous.

      6. Favorite Thing I Drew This Month

I do have a favorite thing I drew this month that I can’t share with you yet. So please accept this bird as a placeholder. (I like the bird too.)

        Family Stuff

It was Penny’s second Easter but the first she was old enough to participate in the egg hunt. It took her a minute to get going and once she did, she had a good time. She definitely enjoyed the chocolate.

We were in charge of dessert this year. We made a coconut cake. I baked, Sophia decorated. Check out those flowers! This was her first time making flowers. Pretty impressive.

We made our annual pilgrimage to the L.A. Festival of Books. It rained in the morning, fairly hard actually for L.A. It was lovely once it cleared up.

I picked up some books that I’m looking forward to reading. I had to work and wasn’t able to stay very long. So I was not able to visit as much as I would have liked. Sorry if I missed you and your awesome books! Next time.

That’s it for this month. If you have an awesome kid comic-related thing, share it in the comments. Have a fantastic May!
