Do your characters want something? They sure do on the FX show The Bear. I’m guessing your main character wants something but what about the rest of your characters? How about that no-name side character?

The Bear is about Carmy, a chef trying to fix his dead brother’s restaurant. But everyone he interacts with has their own agenda. When I tell you this show has drama and is thoroughly entertaining, it’s because no one agrees on anything. Even when they want the same thing, they disagree on how to get there.

The throw-away characters have wants too. The guy with one line that’s just dropping off the meat order does not care about Carmy’s problems. He’s got his own, staying on time with the rest of his deliveries.

If you want your story to be engaging, give your characters a strong point of view and their own agenda.

Write on.

Family Stuff

Sophia and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last month. We got dressed, got a sitter, and went to a fancy downtown rooftop restaurant with an amazing view and mediocre food.

We visited Once Upon A Time, America’s oldest children’s bookstore. I picked up Knight Owl by Christopher Denise “for River” and the graphic novel adaptation of Bunnicula by James Howe, Andrew Donkin, and Stephen Gilpin.

We also went to the Belmont Shore car show where River got to sit in a really cool old truck.

Thanks for reading. See you next month!
