Disco Sucks
This is a short one this month. Hope you’re having an enjoyable summer and keeping cool. I’ve been to the beach with my family a couple of times in the past few weeks. It would be nice to keep that trend going. On to some recommendations.
Song I’m Listening To
“Disco sucks” is the biggest lie the boomers ever told us.” I saw this tweet by Dave Weigel, and yeah…
I’m a big fan of Dagny. She’s a Norwegian artist and makes fantastic pop songs. Check out her EP Ultraviolet. I know pop music is often maligned but it’s like anything else, there’s good and bad versions. If pop music doesn’t do it for you, that’s cool but if you don’t like it because you’re too cool for it, ugh, get a life.
I randomly heard “What’s your name, what’s your number” by The Andrea True Connection. A disco song and artist I’d never heard of. It reminded me of Dagny’s “More More More.” Which I then found out was a cover of Andrea True’s “More More More.” I do prefer Dagny’s cover but what a fun discovery.
Book I’m Reading
The Fifth Quarter – Mike Dawson
4th grader Lori plays on a basketball team but isn’t very good so she only gets to play in an extra period where the points don’t count. But she loves it and wants to get better but her single mindedness comes at the cost of her friendships. Things at home also get complicated when her mom decides to run for town council against the incumbent who is the father of one of her friends.
The story is wonderfully written with realistic characters. Lori is selfish, only considering things from her own perspective and interests, not really being mature enough to navigate the situations she finds herself in.
I like Mike’s work, Freddie & Me, Troop 142. He did another book Ace Face, which had a handful of short stories. One of them was about a super powered family. The dad is a big time superhero but the story is about the kids, two brothers that both have powers but use them to irritate and fight with each other. I grew up with 2 brothers and a sister and let me tell you, if we had powers this is exactly what it would have been like. I hope he’ll revisit these characters again.
What I’m Up To
Woodland Hills is out on submission to different publishers and it has been a little frustrating. A lot actually to be honest. Maybe I’ll write about it in a bit more detail later. It feels like most of the rejections I’m getting are coming from a “Disco Sucks” mindset. Just following the crowd.
I have been busy working on two different ideas as a follow up if Woodland doesn’t connect at this point. So here is an exclusive look at one of those ideas.
Lord Barkwell & Miss Meowington: No jewel is safe while 11-year-old cat burglar Mouse is on the prowl. It’s up to ace private investigator Lord Barkwell to bring this crime spree to an end.
And that’s what’s awesome this month! Thanks for reading.
