Here’s something I’ve not done before, spotlight on a publisher. I’ve found myself with quite a few books from the catalog of Flying Eye Books. They do children’s books and graphic novels. Obviously my main interest lies in graphic novels but I even have (or our kid’s library rather) has one of their kid’s books, A Mouse Called Julian by Joe Todd-Stanton.

The company definitely has a signature feel to it. Everything has lovely art and many of the stories have a whimsical or off center vibe to them.

Some stand out among stand outs are Hilda, Fantasy Sports, and Brownstone’s Mythical Collection. Each of these is a series of books, which I think helps. You get drawn deeper into the worlds and characters.

The Hilda books were turned into a cartoon series on Netflix, so if you’ve got young kids, this is probably the one you are familiar with. And if you like Hilda, you’re in luck, a new book comes out this month, Hilda and Twig Hide From The Rain.

I absolutely love the Fantasy Sports series and I couldn’t really care less about sports IRL. Set in a magical world where our two protagonists who don’t like each other have to cooperate to accomplish their mission. There are only 3 books in this series but it’s been announced it’s going to be a series on Disney Plus at some point.

The Brownstone books are self contained stories about historic mythical characters from different cultures, Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, and so on. The framework for the series is that these stories are told from the perspective of a kid from the Brownstone family who participated in that specific adventure. The stories are recounted by the family historian who is a modern day Brownstone descendant.

Favorite Thing I Drew This Month

A couple panels from a Taylor Rex short comic. working on it. So here’s a sneak peek.

I also made another YouTube video that I think turned out really well. I did a bunch of animation for it. You should definitely check it out 🙂

What I’m Reading

(Aside from the new Hilda book.) I checked out The Mighty Bite by Nathan Hale from the library. As far as I can tell, it’s about a trilobite who goes on an adventure with his pet ambulocetus, a walking whale. Looks like absurd fun.

Family Stuff

A bunch of my family from the East Coast came out to Yosemite for the week. It was great spending time with everyone. It was their first time meeting Penny as well. I also saw a bear in the wild for the first time. We saw quite a few different types of animals on this trip. The bear was definitely a bucket list check off though.

For Halloween, we dressed up as dino riders. If you don’t know, dino riders are fueled by candy. River has been asking every day since, when is Halloween again? I think he’s a fan.

Thanks for reading. See you next month!
