6 Awesome (Kid Comic) Things This Month
1. Something you can read soon
If you read my 3 Questions With… Li Chen you know I absolutely loved Detective Beans. The follow up Adventures In Cat Town is now available for preorder. If you don’t know, pre ordering a book is super helpful for the creator. It shows bookstores and publishers there is interest and they order more/put more marketing into it.
But this is about you. You and your kids like awesome books. So get some Detective Beans in your life!

2. Something you can read now
I’ve followed Peter Wartman on different social media sites for sometime now. I like the spaceship drawings he would post. He recently mentioned he also does comics. I had no idea. I immediately went and checked out his creator owned work.
Over The Wall and the follow up Stonebreaker. It’s about a girl who sneaks into an abandoned city that is now only populated by demons. She’s trying to find her older brother who went missing. Great stuff and kid friendly. Ten and up. He also does the art on The Last Airbender comic. Maybe you’ve heard of that series.

3. Dimitris Pantazis art
I love his stylized characters and engraving like linework.

4. Video essays on comics
The video essays by matttt are really well done. Well researched and thoughtful. I’ve torn through almost all of them. I learn new things on topics I’m quite familiar with. And the creators he spotlights whose work I’m not familiar with inspires me to check them out.
If you want videos adjacent to kid comics, check out the Jeff Smith Bone video or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video.

5. Go to a book signing
These folks are doing just fine without any mention from me. Raina Telegemeier and Scott McCloud, two comic powerhouses teamed up to create a book together.
If your kid is over 10 and reads graphic novels, they’re likely a fan of Raina. If so, and the tour stops near your town, you should definitely take them.

6. Favorite thing I drew this month
I just read The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time and was inspired to do an 80s style family portrait of The Fellowship.

Family Stuff
Took the kids to the annual Chinatown Lunar New Year parade. We’ve gone for the past few years. It’s become a fun tradition. We get Chinese food take out and buy a bunch of confetti cannons and loads of snap pops. River also got cotton candy. I think this was his first time having it. He was a fan but Penny threw hers on the ground.
Sophia also celebrated a birthday. We were going to go to lunch with just the two of us but decided to switch that to dinner with the kids. I’m glad we did. It was a fun evening. Along with dinner we got several different cakes to sample.
We ended up making quite a mess but serendipitously, the staff had left out a roll of paper towels near our table. We put them to good use.

We finished out the month with Wondercon in Anaheim. It was nice to go with the family. It’s a different experience than by myself. I would take more time to peruse and buy more things if I were just me but It’s nice to view the spectacle with a kid’s perspective. Also Rhode Montijo has such a great booth.

That’s it for this month. If you have an awesome kid comic related thing, share it in the comments. Have a fantastic April!
