Welcome to the debut of 3 Questions With… I’ve wanted to interview and get insights from other creators for a while now. Three questions seemed like an enjoyable bite-sized way to do that.

I’ve been a fan of Victoria for some time. Her latest book Hungry Ghost just came out last week.  It’s about Valerie, a teen struggling with an eating disorder, family dynamics, and figuring out how to be happy.

Victoria Ying is a critically acclaimed author and artist living in Los Angeles.  She started her career in the arts by falling in love with comic books, this eventually turned into a career working in animation and graphic novels. Her film credits include Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Paperman, Big Hero 6, and Moana.

She is the author and illustrator of her own series “City of Secrets and City of Illusion” through Penguin/Viking and the illustrator of the DC series “Diana Princess of the Amazons.” Her upcoming graphic novel projects include the Marvel/Scholastic “Shang-Chi and the Secret of Immortality.”

And now, 3 Questions With Victoria Ying.

  1. Why comics?

Comics were my first love. They were the thing that made me believe that a profession in the arts was possible. I’ll never forget the magic of getting lost in a volume of manga and I hope that I can bring that same joy to people.

  1. What is your favorite part of the process?

I love writing and thumbnailing! Everything is still brimming with potential when you’re having fun and just creating something from scratch. As the process drags on, you work on making each panel beautiful, but I find the exuberant joy of telling yourself a story to be the most enjoyable.

  1. What are you currently working on?

I’m working on another YA contemporary book about growing up in the mid aughts and having an internet relationship.

You can find Victoria and links to her books (and one of the best book trailers ever) on her website and her social media.
