3 Questions With… Kay Davault
I’m not sure where I first came across Kay’s work. Maybe I was looking for something new or maybe it was recommended. Regardless, I’m not recommending her to you. I read Star Knights and it’s delightful. It’s about an outcast frog that lives in a magical world once protected by the Star Knights. The frog has his wildest dreams come true and becomes a Star Knight. But of course there’s a lot more involved than he bargained for. It’s really quite lovely.
Kay’s follow up book was Misfit Mansion about a foster home filled with monsters who are set free on the local town. And she has a new series Oddity Woods based on her webcomic that comes out late this summer. Talk about prolific!

Why comics? (What compels you to create in this medium?)
I’ve always loved storytelling, and seeing characters moving and interacting with one another. Comics are something I grew up making, so it always felt like the right fit for me, especially since I often prefer the writing steps over the “sitting down and drawing for days” steps. As long as it’s fun, I’ll keep making them!
What is something you do now that you wish you had either figured out or implemented sooner in your career?
If I could go back and talk to my 22-year-old self, I’d say to stop thinking I wasn’t good enough and to query an agent already. I think a lot about what delayed my career was fear, and not quite knowing how to break into comics on my own. I also recently reached a point where I’m able to go from thumbnails directly to inks, without the detailed pencils, which has saved a lot of time.
What are you currently working on?
Right now I’m finishing up a sequel to my 2023 graphic novel Misfit Mansion. I’m also getting ready for the launch of my next book Oddity Woods, which will release this August! Future plans are working on book 2 of Oddity Woods, and maybe starting a new webcomic if I have time.
